Mathematics and Data Careers
FBI mathematicians and data scientists solve the FBI’s most complex and computationally difficult problems.
Overview
Our mathematicians and data scientists develop creative solutions to computational problems in fields such as cryptanalysis, data science, and statistical analysis. Often, they use their analytical, mathematical, and intuitive skills to decipher secret, complex, or hidden information and translate it into actionable solutions.
Examples of Mathematics and Data Roles

Cryptologic mathematicians work closely with investigative teams to access content and extract actionable leads from encrypted digital evidence. They determine approaches to problems that are designed to be intractable.

Cryptanalysts work on codebreaking and analyzing evidence in a variety of forms and record their findings in lab reports that may be used to testify in court.

Data analysts (PDF) conduct data modeling using statistical and mathematical principles in order to advance investigative work.

Data scientists (PDF) develop hypotheses and produce actionable insights using advanced statistical and mathematical techniques.

Qualifications and Eligibility
Minimum Qualifications
For most mathematics positions, you must have one of the following:

A bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. accredited college or university in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field.

A combination of education and experience with course work equivalent to a major mentioned above. Some positions require completion of 24-30 course hours equivalent to a major mentioned above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
